“There are no shortcuts on race day.”

SLP students proved that they are not only achievers in the academic field, but in the athletic field as well as they battled it out in this year’s Amazing Race held at the UST Grounds, in line with the celebration of the CRS College Week last October 11, 2014.

The Amazing Race, now in its 8th year, is sponsored and facilitated by the Sports Science Society. It promotes physical and mental fitness as racers try to execute various tasks and solve different puzzles all throughout the race. This year, many were pleasantly surprised when an SLP Freshman, Krizia Panlilio, finished the race with Alvin Marquez (1SPS) in 2nd place, completing the Final Three along with other SPS students and interns. Other SLP racers were Anya Leoncio and Vianca Ocampo (1SLP), Arian Joven and Frances Malapit (3SLP), and Anna Francisco and Jeco Baes (4SLP).

The race started out with teams getting their race kits packed with their first clue, placed at the Benavides Monument, which the racers joked was like a replica of the Cornucopia from the Hunger Games.  The first challenge was to search the entire St. Martin de Porres Building to find a superhero who would lead them to their next task. This was followed by different challenges like carrying a water bucket while passing through tires and memorizing scientific names of trees. Racers were also tasked to do exercises, sing the university hymn, as well as beg for money to be donated to the OuRScholar Program. Racers had to run back and forth, from Lover’s Lane to the Medicine Building, to the Botanical Garden and back to the Field, up to the 4th floor of the Main Building and back again to the starting line. Even though racing against each other, SLPs were seen cheering on and helping one another.

Krizia Panlilio (1SLP) with partner Alvin Marquez (1SpS) do a YJ routine as one of their tasks.

The Top 3 pushed it to the limit as they accomplished an obstacle course wherein they had to roll and stack up large tires and complete a word puzzle in the end. “My favorite challenge was when we had to ask strangers for money. We managed to collect more than the amount required and we got to donate for a good cause. The obstacle course was the hardest because we were already exhausted by that time, so it was hard to continue but we still managed to complete the race because everyone was watching us and our friends were cheering us on, so we had to do well,” stated Krizia Panlilio after placing 2nd on the race.

The Top 3 teams pose together before taking on the obstacle course.

When asked about how she felt about being one of the winners of the Amazing Race, Krizia answered, “Me and my partner weren’t really aiming to win. We just wanted to have fun and finish the challenges. Nung nasama kami sa Top 3, we were really shocked kasi hindi namin expect na aabot kami doon. I’m happy because I had the chance to represent SLP in this sporty event. At least napatunayan na hindi lang leaders ang SLP – sporty na rin.”
