V-DAY: To the One Who is Afraid to Love
5:30 PM
To the one who is afraid to love,
Love is all about taking risks. If you cannot love because you do not think the other can love you back, then that is not love. It is a desire for companionship, a desire for a relationship rather than a desire for the person.
Love is about giving, first and foremost. When you do not expect anything in return, only then is it real.
However, wanting something in return is different. It is natural to want your affections returned – natural to desire for those hand-holdings and a warm body to lean on and a warm arm to rest upon your shoulders.
Expecting and wanting are different. Expecting is a form of demanding and love does not demand.
Love is about jumping to the fire and hoping it will not burn.
If the time and person are right, the fire will not hurt you.
If they are not, then do not fret. The fire will still warm you if you let it, and when the heat gets too much and it burns at times, revel in the pain and beauty of having leapt into it and loved – but know the moment when the fire aims to warm and when it aims to scorch.
Leaping into the fire is a beautiful thing but knowing when to step out of it is even more so.
Do not be afraid of the fire.
Be afraid of never having taken the leap to feel warm.
