“My heart is drumming in my chest so hard it aches,
but it's the good kind of ache, like the feeling you get on the first real day
of autumn, when the air is crisp and the leaves are all flaring at the edges
and the wind smells just vaguely of smoke - like the end and the beginning of
something all at once.” – Lauren Oliver, Delirium
September
is usually the month wherein the first break of autumn falls in temperate
countries in the northern hemisphere. But since we live in a country so near
the equator that our only seasons are Not-As-Hot, Hot, Very Hot, and
Jesus-Take-The-Wheel-I’m-Sweating-Like-A-Faucet, I can only hope to let you
feel what autumn is like through your ears.
Autumn
is when summer has left, taking the life of the leaves along with it and
replacing their green hues with sunsets. It is in this process that we see how
summer never truly passes because it leaves behind its colours. The leaves begin
to look like tongues of fire and eventually fall off their branches. They crackle
at your feet when you step on them, just like the sound a hearth makes. The air
begins to thin and send tingles all over one’s skin; sweaters start to go
in-season.
Autumn
is the transition period that overstayed its welcome. It is when warmth falls
in love with coldness and coldness with warmth, and no matter how absurd it
seems, they do not conflict at all and even harmonize with each other. Bliss
and melancholy meet into a single focal point, hinting at nostalgia and the
hospitality of isolation. It is the best paradox, a contradiction that
encapsulates the heart, mind, and soul into a twilight of the collision of
opposing concepts. When autumn shows up at your doorstep, all light and warm
like a next-door neighbour, let it in. And once you let it in, it starts to
fill the house with itself – like a close friend or even a sibling – and turns
the house into a home.
Plug
in your headphones or speakers, as you become enveloped in the autumnal sounds
of this playlist. Grab a book of your choice (and we all know this book we
speak of is not meant to be read for leisure nor is it one of those YA
literature books you’ve been dying to read because we all know none of us have
the time for that, so just get the book you’re supposed to be reading to study
for an upcoming quiz) and a warm cup of coffee (because you’ll need it), and
hit play.
Listen
to this mix here. (Listening time: 1hr, 33min)
THE MONTHLY MIX is a playlist of songs with a specific theme, to be released every month. We, of the Literary Section, are aware that not everyone has the same music taste which is why we try to keep the playlists as diverse and open as possible. And to ensure this, we would very much like to hear your song requests and theme suggestions! Don’t be afraid to speak up. Instead, amplify your voice, amplify your sound! You can drop your requests and suggestions below in the comments section.
