FEATURE: SLP Against Deafness

(Introductory paragraphs by Jeanne Bilasano, 2SLP)

To be understood is one of the best feelings in the world. It gives us that sense of belonging and sense of acceptance.  It is truly touching and moving to have people who understand you and your situation but it is so much more compelling when you understand and accept yourself and the circumstance you are in and never letting it hinder your growth. Because realizing your self-worth is far greater than the acceptance of the people around you.
In an interview by RC Dionisio, one brave and beautiful soul, Theia Gutay from 1SLP, told us her story-- a story about accepting deafness and living way beyond its restrictions.

What is your condition?
My right ear is severely to profoundly deaf. The doctors don't really know what it is exactly because they don’t know how I got it and they said that it was inborn and I had nerve damage.
What personal experience or advice can you share that can empower the deaf community?
I never really knew I was deaf until I reached prep. My classmate whispered something to my right ear and I didn't hear it. I didn't know it was wrong and my parents found out about my hearing condition when I was in Grade 4. My sister put earphones on my right ear and I said that I couldn't hear anything. My parents were surprised and they looked for doctors who could explain how I got deaf and what my condition was, but sadly, no one ever really gave us a concrete answer. Growing up, I was bullied for wearing hearing aids, but I never let it get to me because I never saw my deafness as a curse. To me, it was a blessing. I could phase out from noises I didn't want to hear. I could sleep well at night knowing that I could just cover my left ear and the whole world would be silent. I can play music like I was never deaf. I have 15% discounts on food because I'm disabled. Being deaf has its pros and cons, but it should never bring you down. There will always be ways for you to be heard and understood.
