SLP Opening GA
1:00 PM
The faculty and students of the Speech-Language Pathology program showed their adventurous and carefree personalities during Luster: Illuminating the Year Ahead, the Annual Opening General Assembly held last September 16, 2017 at the Benavides Auditorium. Mr. Kyle Corbito and Ms. Mayka Causing hosted the lantern festival-inspired event. Luster, which means a glow or shine of light, symbolizes foregoing past problems to allow new beginnings.
The Speech-Language Pathology
Society’s President, Ms. Denise Obando, delivered the opening remarks. She
mentioned unity in variety as this year’s goal. She also highlighted the
importance of remembering beginnings, appreciating the present, while having something
to look forward to despite the heavy loads we face ahead. The significance of SLP
ties as a block and as a society in the long run was also mentioned. It was
revealed that the executive board has decided to have festivals as an overall
theme for the school year. Consequently, different festivals will inspire each
coming event. Speech-Language Pathology Society’s Internal Vice-President, Ms.
Vianca Ocampo, introduced the projects. The
numerous events and their respective schedules were announced, along with a
short overview of said events. Ms. Denise Obando took the stage once again as
she introduced the Speech-Language Pathology Society's Executive Board,
and Executive Committee.
The first guest speaker, a graduate of UST CRS-SLP
Batch 2015, Ms. Gisselle Esguerra, CSP-PASP gave a powerful talk about the
where, who, when, how and why of an individual as one journeys from being a
student to a Speech-Language Pathologist. The second guest speaker, also a
graduate of UST CRS-SLP Batch 2015, Mr. Doldenn Modesto, CSP-PASP delivered an
honest message about what we are to expect with the path we chose. He talked
about the sacrifices one has to make and lessons he will never forget.
Then, an open forum
proceeded, where the students had the chance to ask the guest speakers any
advice or clarifications about their experiences.
It was finally time for everyone's beloved
game, Save the President. It was a unique experience since for the first time, several
alumni, some of which were faculty joined in with the students. When the fun
and laughter died down, Miss Judith A. Damian, M.S., CCC-SLP, CDP, CSP-PASP,
department chair of Speech-Language Pathology provided a heartfelt
closing message, which, motivated everyone to do their best for the upcoming academic
year.
It was a
sight to see as students and faculty enjoyed themselves for a change and got to
know each other better. They set aside their differences and bonded on their
love for the SLP program. It would indeed be a beacon of light we would
remember during the darkest of times. - by Rezmira Maninang.
