SLPs shine in the General Assembly

Fifteen freshmen comprised the new batch of SLP students for the school year 2017 – 2018. The batch was welcomed by the SLP Society during their Freshmen Orientation, “Thousand Smiles,” last August 3 at St. Martin de Porres Building.

The event started with a getting to know game wherein the Freshmen would share something about themselves. This was followed by the officers orienting them about the SLP Society and the first year’s academic curriculum. The professors and staff of the SLP Department were also introduced and student speaker Mico Untalan gave a talk about the life of a SLP student as a freshman.

Block adviser and new department chair, Ma’am Judith A. Damian, M.S., CCC-SLP, CDP, CSP-PASP, welcomed the Freshmen students by saying that through the years they must keep in mind why they are in SLP and that they must find their purpose in why they are in this field.

“You are in the best institution right now and the reason why I’m saying that is because I know that as a fact. You are in one of the best universities in the Philippines, and you have the best professors. There is a history behind it and you will come to know that you are a part of it,” said Damian.

Also present was former department chair and current assistant dean, Asst. Prof. Ma. Georgina D. Mojica, MHPed, CSP-PASP, who also welcomed the students on behalf of the entire college. She stated that ever since the program was started in 2009, the department has always felt like family.

“You are in totally strong and abled hands. You may not know the importance of your course now but everybody will make sure that you are being molded into the Thomasian SLP that you all desire to be,” said Mojica.

The orientation concluded with the students sharing about why they chose to be in SLP and what they expect in the following years. The officers then accompanied the new students as they moved on to their campus tour and Freshmen Walk.

SLP Society auditor Samantha Chan who staffed for the Freshmen Walk festivities said that it was fun having the chance to meet the new students. She enjoyed giving them tips and answering their questions.

“Even if they had a lot of activities they still smiled all throughout. It was nice to see them easily talk to each other and befriend one another. I felt that they were able to create a strong bond among themselves, which is great especially since they are so small in number,” said Chan.

SLP treasurer Katrina Martinez also assisted the Freshmen noting that although the events were tiring, it was all worth it for the new batch of students. Like every freshman, she described the students to be a bit shy. But it made her happy that as the week progressed, she saw them grow out of their shell and make friends with one another.

“When I was a freshman, I wasn't able to attend the orientations and campus tour, so staffing for the freshmen gave me a lot of excitement. The experience was surreal especially seeing everyone give their hearts out just to make these events possible,” said Martinez.

The Freshmen Week activities spanned for two days. Their University-wide general orientation was held at the Quadricentennial Pavillion after the college orientation. The campus tour, welcome walk, and welcome party were held the following day. – by Vianca Ocampo

Quality over Quantity; EB’s focus for upcoming school year

To prepare for the activities of the upcoming school year, the Executive Board (EB) of the Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) Society started their strategic planning last June and early July by holding a series of meetings participated in by student leaders and administrators of the College of Rehabilitation Sciences.

The board was advised by SLP Department Chair, Assoc. Prof. Ma. Georgina Mojica, MHPed, CSP-PASP, to focus on strengthening the annual projects and having a cohesive direction for the upcoming events. As a new batch of students are coming in for the next semester, the EB would also have to also spearhead the Freshmen Orientation, adjusting to have six major events this coming academic year.

“Planning ahead allows us to have enough time to consider other factors that would make the plan more feasible. Through strategic plannings with the EB, everyone's thoughts and ideas were considered, making each event more thoroughly planned,” said Society President, Denise Obando.

SLP Society co-adviser Sir Jonathan Gerona, CSP-PASP, also highlighted the importance of strengthening the advocacies that the Society adopts every year. He encouraged the group to have the projects extend their reach for the entire Thomasian community to be more involved and aware of the Society’s ideals.

The group also sat down with the CRS Student Council and the CRS Dean, Assoc. Prof. Cheryl R. Peralta, DrPH, who stated that it would be best to have just three to four core projects that would focus on the pillars of leadership and teaching, research, community-building, and social presence.

“Limiting the projects would ensure its quality, that with even just one event an impact can be made through thorough planning. This would also ensure more participation from the rest of the members since it makes their attendance in the event worth it. In terms of implementation there will be less worry for the part of the officers since papers need not to be rushed and crammed,” said Obando.

The dean also advised the student leaders to have minor projects centering on student integrity and mental health. This would further emphasize the role and responsibility of organizations in uplifting the student body and being a mediator between the staff and the students.

As the societies aim to have more socially-relevant projects for the upcoming school year, the EB also met with CRS College Secretary, Ms. Ma. Roxanne L. Fernandez, MSPT, PTRP, together with other organizations, to discuss proposals for community development activities. Plans from last year are to be carried out for this year’s LibREHAB, but societies are advised to broaden their scope to include Thomasians and non-Thomasians. – by Vianca A. Ocampo
