The Physical Therapy Society,
Occupational Therapy Society, Sports Science Society and the Speech Language
Pathology Society came together to advocate wellness and health for the
communication development entitled, “IIbRehab: Everyday is a Rehab Life” held at
Abucay, Bataan last October 17, 2014.
After three hours on the road, the
student volunteers arrived at their destination along
with their supervisor Ms. Joyce Anne Ponciano. Upon their arrival, the students
eagerly started preparing for their activities. The SPS volunteers kick-started
the day with a Tai Chi exercise for the elderly.
After the relaxing exercise, the PT volunteers then gave an enlightening
seminar about proper posture and exercise. This was followed by the checking of
vital signs administered by the OT volunteers.
Meanwhile, the SLP students were tasked to educate the parents and guardians of the persons with disability about vocal hygiene, by imparting on them the importance of our voice. We use our voices every day to speak and communicate effectively. Imagine going a day without being able to talk. How will you be able to communicate your intentions? It will take a lot more effort without the capacity of speech. Therefore, we must learn how to care of our vocal chords, the voice “generator”, because communication is an essential part of our lives.

Before the start of the
seminar with the parents, the SLP volunteers mingled and got to know everyone first, before taking the children to a different room to play as the seminar started. The
SLP student volunteers took their turns explaining different aspects of vocal
hygiene, vocal misuse and vocal abuse. Among the topics discussed were:
respiration, posture, hydration, coughing, throat clearing, whispering,
yelling, vocal rest, and smoking.
Afterwards, the volunteers and the participants all sat down in a circle with Ms. Ponciano for questions and clarifications. The participants were very active in asking questions and taking notes of the things they have learned. After the seminar, the parents and guardians left content that they have learned about ways to care for their voice.

The day ended with an aerobic exercise lead by the SPS volunteers to keep the energy going through the rest of the day, followed by a pictorial. On the way home, the students were happy about the day, remembering how warmly they were welcomed, how much they learned and experienced, the friends they have made, and most importantly, how positively they have affected the lives of the participants. Truly, it was a fun and fulfilling experience.
